John Wick is an American neo-noir action thriller media franchise created by screenwriter Derek Kolstad and owned by Summit Entertainment. Keanu Reeves plays John Wick, a retired assassin seeking revenge for the murder of the dog he was given by his recently deceased wife and the theft of his car.
The franchise began with the release of John Wick in 2014, followed by two sequels, John Wick: Chapter 2 on February 11, 2017, and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum on May 17, 2019. All three films were considered critical and box office successes, grossing a combined total of more than $587 million worldwide. A fourth installment, John Wick: Chapter 4, is in pre-production and is scheduled to be released on May 27, 2022. A fifth installment is also in the pipeline and will begin filming in 2021, directly after the fourth film.
John Wick is on the run and being hunted on an open assassination contract for $14 million because he broke a cardinal rule: he took a life on the grounds of the Continental Hotel. The victim, Santino D’Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio), was a member of the High Table – the organization that ordered the open assassination contract.
John should have already been executed, but Continental’s manager Winston (Ian McShane) has given him a one-hour grace period before he is “excommunicated” – his membership revoked, he is banned from all services, and cut off from other members. John uses favors and contacts from his past life to stay alive while fighting his way out of New York City. In October 2016, Stahelski announced the development of the third film. Production on the film began in early 2018.
